Frequently Asked Questions
What causes excessive tearing and staining?
Staining can be caused by a variety of things; here are some of the most common causes:
Clogged or shallow tear ducts: Studies indicate that 20-25% of small dogs and cats are born with closed or shallow tear ducts. Tears overflow because their eyelid space is not deep enough to contain them.
Bacterial & Yeast Infections: When your pet's facial hair is wet from excessive tearing it becomes a breeding ground for bacterial and yeast infections. The latter involves red yeast, which causes deep reddish-brown stains.
Cutting Teeth: Cutting teeth may cause changes in the head & mouth structure of your pet, placing pressure on the tear ducts.
Irritation & Allergies: Some animals get hair or eyelashes into their eyes, causing irritation. Shampoos and other chemicals can also irritate their eyes. Many breeds are susceptible to a number of different kinds of allergies which can stem from their food, medicine, or environment.
Hard Water: Water with high mineral levels can cause staining.
Food & Treats: Diet can play a significant role in tearing. Many commercial foods contain additives, preservatives, and food coloring. This can lead to staining.
Fleas: Fleas survive in moisture which they often get from the eye or mouth area. This causes irritation and red stains can stem from flea feces. TUnfortunately, these are just a few of the causes of excessive tearing and tear staining.
Why is PurEyes so different from all the other products that I've bought that don't work?
PurEyes addresses the root of the problem. It contains a cleaner that resolves any bacterial infection and an astringent that dries the area of excess moisture. We've also added a herbal flower extract that acts as a natural antibiotic.
PurEyes is a topical tear stain remover. Other products are often masked as palatable supplements, taking months to work and requiring your pet to ingest antibiotics (e.g., Tylan, Tylosin as tartrate).
What if I've used bleach or peroxide to clean the area around the eyes?
Bleach and peroxide can make the hair shaft very porous, causing the stain to set into the hair. PurEyes will only lighten the areas previously damaged by bleach or peroxide, but all regrowth will be clean.
PLEASE do not use peroxide, bleach, or Woolite on your animals.
Is PurEyes safe to use on my pregnant dog or cat?
Yes. It is 100% safe to use on pregnant or lactating animals and even small kittens (as long as they are over the age of 8 weeks).
Is PurEyes applied inside the eyes?
No. PurEyes is to be applied externally only.
What happens if a small amount gets into my pet's eyes?
The ingredients in PurEyes are gentle enough that there is nothing to worry about if a small amount gets into your pet's eyes.
Can I use PurEyes on my dog or cat's legs, tail, or mouth stain areas? Is it safe?
Yes. The ingredients will not harm your animal.
Does PurEyes fade or bleach colored animals?
No. The product does not contain any peroxides or bleaching agents. Your pet's hair will not discolor.
