Using the Simple CBD Oil Dosage Calculator
Congratulations on your purchase of CBD oil for your pet’s health. Many people have seen the benefits of CBD for pet health and wellness, and we’re sure your four-legged fur baby is going to love you even more for the purchase.
You may be wondering what the right CBD dosage for pets looks like.
The first step in determining the correct dosage is to check out our handy little calculator above. It’s pretty simple: in just three steps you’ll know the minimum, average, and maximum daily dose we recommend for your pet.
- The first step is to input the size of your bottle in ml.
- The second step is to enter the total mg of CBD that is in the bottle.
- Last, but not least, enter your pet’s weight in lbs.
As you can see by the last part, figuring out the CBD dosage for dogs can be trickier if they are a bit on the bigger side. What’s nice about dosing CBD is you have a ballpark that you can work within, so even if your pup has put on some weight since his last visit to the vet, as long as you don’t exceed the maximum daily dose you’ll be good.
To determine the maximum daily dose, we use a limit of 5 mg/kg or 5 mg per 2.2 lbs. We increase this recommended maximum only when new studies emerge supporting higher doses. Please talk to your veterinarian about doses higher than 5mg/kg.
Figuring out the correct CBD dosage for pets will largely be up to you, as the owner. You know your pet best. Make sure to keep an eye on him for a few hours after you first administer CBD; pay attention to the effects it has so you know how to adjust the dose to maximize the benefits.
Besides just showing you the minimum, average, and maximum dose, our CBD oil dosage calculator will tell you roughly how many drops your CBD bottle contains, the concentration of your CBD bottle, and the concentration of the CBD itself.
Our CBD dosage calculator is a handy little tool that helps you improve your pet’s health.
Using the Detailed CBD Oil Dosing Chart
First find the Dosing Chart specific to the strength of CBD that you will be administering to your pet (125mg, 250mg, 750mg or 1500mg).
From there decide on what strength of dosage you want to give your pet: Minimum, Low, Medium, Strong or Maximum (There is a brief description of each level to help you find the best dosage for your pets needs).
Find your pet’s weight on the left hand side of the chart and follow the grid to the right until you reach the desired strength you have decided on. When you arrive to the correct block it will give you the suggested drops to administer your pet every 6-8 hours (Note that ½ of the dropper is equivalent to 16 drops).
If your suggested dosage says to use another level of CBD find the respected dosing chart and start off with the minimum dosage for your pets weight.
Dosing CBD doesn't have to be confusing!
In fact, some of the best advice we can offer is to monitor how your pet reacts to CBD and make adjustments accordingly. Unlike many drugs, there is little to worry about when increases dosages.
Some pets react well to low doses, while others need a good bit more. We always recommend watching for side effects or abnormalities whenever changing dosages, but if you see your pet reacting well to a higher dose, there is nothing to be concerned about.
Use the following guidelines for finding the average dosages. As well, you can use these same guidelines to find the correct CBD dosage for your cat, dog, horse, etc.
Weight and medical condition will determine how much CBD an animal can take not the species of said animal — CBD appears to affect all of us equally.
The dosage below are typically administered 1-3 times a day, and we recommend starting in the low tier once a day for the first week before moving up.
- Low Tier — 0.022 mg/lb or 0.05mg/kg
- Average Tier — 0.068 mg/lb or 0.15 mg/kg
- Strong Tier — 0.136 mg/lb or 0.30 mg/kg
How Much Hemp CBD For Specific Medical Conditions?
These are some of the most frequently asked questions we get, and we have an easy answer for you.
How much CBD oil should I give my dog for anxiety?
For preventive health and aging, the low tier of 0.022 mg/lb or 0.05mg/kg is a great place to start. There’s may be days that you want to increase to the medium tier to help with situational issues like stress or allergies. Most people will only administer CBD once and sometimes twice for preventive health.
How much CBD for epilepsy or cancer?
For all chronic medical conditions, a dosage that falls in the medium tier — 0.068 mg/lb or 0.15 mg/kg — is preferred by most pet owners. The one exception is clinical insomnia which is likely to require a dosage that falls into the strong tier.
If your pet is not sleeping well due to pain, discomfort, etc. a medium tier dosage may be all that’s needed. Many report better sleep even with low doses of CBD because it helps with other medical issues that may prevent restful sleep.
Hemp CBD is biphasic, and with most dosages, it will have a slight stimulating effect — though it does not appear to be enough to keep your or your pet awake when trying to sleep.

What Happens If You Give Your Pet Too Much CBD?
If you give your pet too much CBD, you may notice that it makes them tired — where a lower dose may have given them a boost in their step. If you notice this side effect, there is little to nothing to worry about.
In fact, some pet owners purposely give their pets high doses of CBD to help with insomnia. Common side effects such as nausea or diarrhea may happen, but they are fairly rare and mild.
The one side effect of concern with high doses of CBD is its affinity to temporarily inhibit enzymes that metabolize drugs in the liver — grapefruit does this as well.
As such, if your pet is on a dosage-sensitive prescription drug that’s metabolized in the liver, you’ll likely want to keep CBD dosages mild or low.
Your veterinarian will be able to help you monitor your pet to ensure that CBD’s relationship with the other drug is positive.
In many cases, a specific CBD dosage has led to a decrease in the other drug’s dosage with no increase of side effects.
Our CBD pet calculator will help you find the correct low and mild dosage based on your pet’s weight, and we absolutely recommend talking to your veterinarian first before doing this on your own. Last check out this article that explores the issue in-depth.
What’s Better For Dosage: CBD Oil, Treats, Capsules, etc?
If you’re looking for precise dosages, our PurCBD+ oil/tincture is still your best option as capsules and treats will carry a one-size-fits-all dose.
However, this is not much of a concern as even extremely large doses are well tolerated by most pets with no signs of side effects. Another pro of the tincture is it’s fast absorption rate.
Besides those two factors, there are only a few minor differences amongst CBD products, which you can find out about below.
How to Dose with CBD Capsules, Treats, Chews, and Pellets
Our Hemp CBD Gold Capsules contain 5 mg each making them great for dogs 40 lbs and up. At this weight level, most pet owners find moving up the dosage in increments of 5 mg is effective and preferred.
Like all other forms of CBD, capsules typically provide relief of symptoms for 6-8 hours. In that time, you can administer more CBD if needed. Unlike the oil/tincture, capsules have to pass through the digestive system before it’s absorbed into the bloodstream so expect 30-60 minutes before you see CBD working.
If they need a quicker onset of relief, we recommend PurCBD+. The thin tissue of the mouth makes CBD readily absorbable, and you’ll typically see CBD working within 10-30 minutes depending on how long your pet held the oil in their mouth.
Hemp Treats & Soft Chews
Our Hemp Dog Treats and Hemp Soft Chews are 4 mg and 2 mg. Making the treats fantastic for dogs 20 lbs and up. While our Soft Chews are great for small pets under 15 lbs and older dogs that have trouble chewing harder treats.
It’s surprisingly difficult to find dose-appropriate treats for small pets, so we knew we had to change that.
Like the capsules, treats will have to pass through the digestive tract before the body can absorb it so expect the onset of effects to begin within 30-60 minutes. Feel free to break the treats in half for around half the regular dose if needed.
CBD for Horses
Equine Hemp Pellets
While catered to riders, farriers, trainers, and large-animal veterinarians, we designed our Hemp Pellets in a way that makes them perfect for all animals that consume food in pellet form.
Instead of making a large one-size-fits-all pellet we broke up the large dose into mini-pellets. This allows goats, sheep, and even pocket pets like rabbits to benefit from taking hemp CBD.
Here is the guideline to follow when giving Equine Hemp Pellets to your horse. 1 tablespoon equals 25 mg. Remember this is just a guideline and starting point.
Your average CBD capsule formulated for humans is around 10-15 mg, and that’s what we recommend for a 350 lb miniature horse.
If administering to a much smaller animal, you’ll want to check out the charts “Generic Hemp Equine Pellets Dosage Guide” and “Hemp CBD Tier Dosage Guidelines”.
Hemp Pellets Dosage Guide For Horses:
Miniature (<350lbs) = 10 mg
Pony (<900lbs) = 20 mg
Horse (<1500lbs) = 50 mg
XL/Draft (>1500lbs) = 65 mg
Generic Hemp Pellets Dosage Guide:
1 tbsp = 25 mg
½ Tbsp = 12.2 mg
1 tsp = 8.3 mg
½ tsp = 4.15
¼ tsp = 2 mg
All in all, giving your pet too much CBD will just likely result in you wasting money. This often limits small pet owners to the tincture form, but at Innovet Pet, we were determined to not have that happen to you.
That’s why we provide Soft Hemp Chews that are appropriately dosed for small pets and easy on their smaller jaws. We even have farm animals and pocket pets covered with our Hemp Pellets.
