How Can CBD Oil Help My Horse?
Owners turn to it when their horses show signs of stiffness after hard workouts, anxiety during transport, or general restlessness.
CBD can offer support to all horses in some way, whether that is using it as an anxiety aid to help calm occasional anxiousness or using it to support mobility and joint function.
Oral CBD administration in horses with mild joint osteoarthritis resulted in measurable improvements in pain scores and quality of life. Research is still developing, but the findings support CBD's role as a daily wellness supplement when paired with good nutrition and routine veterinary care.
⚠️ The FDA does not allow health claims about CBD's ability to cure or treat disease. Always consult your veterinarian before starting any new supplement.
CBD is largely derived from hemp plants because unlike its cousin, marijuana, hemp lacks high amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which gives marijuana its signature high and psychoactive effects. When you pluck most of the THC away from cannabis plants, they can no longer cause a high, and they become incredibly safe for us and our pets. Essentially, CBD from hemp plants lets you take advantage of medical marijuana's benefits, but without the high.

How Does CBD Oil for Horses Work?
CBD works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system, a signaling network present in all mammals.
The endocannabinoid system is an intercellular communication system that regulates physiological processes in the organism and promotes homeostasis.
It plays a role in regulating pain, inflammation, mood, and stress responses.
- CB1 cannabinoid receptors are more widely distributed in the central nervous system,
- whereas CB2 receptors are mainly located in the periphery, with significant antinociceptive activity and fewer psychoactive side effects.
Both receptor types have been identified in equine synovial tissue, making CBD particularly relevant for horses dealing with joint discomfort.
CBD is derived from hemp, which lacks high amounts of THC. When most of the THC is removed, the plant can no longer cause a high and becomes safe for animals.
Yes. The research on equine CBD safety is reassuring. Multiple clinical studies have evaluated CBD tolerance in horses across a range of dosages and found it to be well tolerated.
The pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of CBD in senior horses were evaluated, and no adverse effects from administering either the oral or IV dose of CBD were found.
Single-dose enteral administration of CBD/CBDA-rich hemp extract up to 8 mg/kg does not appear to produce neurologic, behavioral, or gastrointestinal effects in horses.
Innovet's CBD oil for horses is third-party lab tested, non-GMO, and free from pesticides, additives, and preservatives, so it’s guaranteed to be safe for your horse.
‼️Consult your veterinarian before use, especially if your horse takes other medications.
Yes. Hemp-derived CBD with less than 0.3% THC is federally legal in the United States under the 2018 Farm Bill, and Innovet's CBD oil for horses meets that threshold.
However, if your horse competes, the rules are different. CBD and CBDA were moved to the FEI's list of controlled medications as specified substances in 2022, and cannabinoids are banned in most national and international equine sports associations.
If you ride competitively in shows that do drug testing, you will need to stop giving your horse CBD 7 days before the event.
For retired horses and pleasure horses not subject to competition drug testing, CBD is a legal and accessible supplement. Always check the rules of your specific governing body before use.

We've mentioned before that we prefer CBD oils because they make administering precise dosages effortless, and it's the easiest way to find out how much CBD a horse needs. Remember, all horses are unique, and this, along with the severity of their condition, can greatly affect the amount of CBD you should give them.
Fortunately, it's not a complete guessing game, as your horse's weight will give you a dosage you can start with. There is no unsafe amount of CBD you can give your horse, but we've found that lower and medium dosages are often all that's needed, and they don't risk making your horse tired like high dosages can.
We break individual/single CBD dosages into three tiers based on the horse's weight, and each has its advantages.
Low Tier Single Dose (0.009 mg/lb or 0.02 mg/kg):
This is where we recommend you start, and you can keep your horse here while CBD builds up in their system, which takes a week or two. If using CBD for preventative health or overall wellness, this is a great dosage range to stay in.
Average Tier Single Dose (0.041 mg/lb or 0.09 mg/kg):
By the name, you can guess that this is the most popular dosage as it typically helps with most conditions without generating notable side effects.
Strong Tier Single Dose (0.228 mg/lb or 0.5 mg/kg):
Our CBD Oil for horses comes in two concentration sizes, so it's just as easy to give a precise dosage to a pony as it is to a draft horse. Our 750mg is suited to smaller horses and ponies, while our 1500mg is better for larger horses that require more CBD. Same great CBD tincture, one just has more CBD.
Published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, researchers conclude that oral administration of CBD at doses up to 3 mg/kg is well tolerated in horses and that prolonged administration for up to 6 weeks does not produce any permanent biochemical abnormalities.
Most horses tolerate CBD oil well at recommended doses. The most commonly reported side effects are mild and temporary, including:
- loose stools
- slight sedation
- transient changes in appetite
In one 6-week study, some horses had soft-formed manure for a period of time, though all horses maintained normal physical examination parameters, attitude, and appetite throughout.
CBD may interact with other medications and should be administered cautiously and according to the product manufacturer's directions.
If your horse shows unusual behavior or digestive upset after starting CBD, reduce the dose and consult your vet.
⚠️ Avoid combining CBD with blood thinners or other medications without veterinary guidance. Reactions at standard doses are typically mild and resolve on their own.

Any horse can benefit from the wellness support of CBD, but this CBD Oil is particularly useful for certain cases.
- Horses with Arthritis
If your vet has diagnosed your horse with arthritis, you know that finding a sustainable, long-term management plan is non-negotiable. This bundle can help manage the daily discomfort and inflammation. Eventually, you may be able to reduce the need for constant NSAIDs.
- Anxious Horses
For the horse that gets stressed during travel, vet visits, or farrier appointments, the oil can be the solution you’re looking for. It helps them relax and focus without the heavy sedation of pharmaceuticals.
- Horses with Loss of Appetite
If your horse is eating inconsistently or showing disinterest in feed, CBD may help. It supports digestive comfort and can promote a more regular appetite, particularly in horses dealing with stress-related or inflammation-driven eating changes.
- Horses with Nausea
Nausea in horses can stem from gut sensitivity, travel stress, or post-exercise discomfort. CBD interacts with receptors involved in digestive regulation, which may help settle an unsettled stomach and support overall gastrointestinal ease.
- Large Breeds and Drafts
Bigger horses like Warmbloods and Drafts put more stress on their joints, plain and simple. Our XL bundle is specifically designed to provide the robust, long-term support these gentle giants need to stay sound and comfortable.
