How to Calculate the Right CBD Dosage for Dogs

Many people have seen the benefits of CBD for dogs for overall pet health and wellness, and we're sure your four-legged fur baby is going to love you even more for the purchase. You may be wondering what the correct mg of CBD oil dosage for pets looks like.

The first step in determining the optimal dosage is to check out our handy little CBD potency calculator above. It's pretty simple: in just three steps you'll know the perfect dose. As well as which CBD products we recommend for your dogs and cats.

  • The first step is to select what type of pet you are looking for.
  • The second step is to select your pets body weight in lbs.
  • Last, but not least is to select what level of dosage you wish to give your pet (Minimum optimal dose - Maximum optimal dose)
Using the dosing calculator - Usually, lightweight pets use low CBD concentration.

As you can see in the final bullet point, calculating and measuring the amount of CBD dosage for dogs can be trickier if they are a bit on the larger side. What's nice about dosing CBD oil is you have a safe and wide range of mg of CBD that you can give your dog based on their symptoms. So even if your pup has put on some weight since his last visit to the veterinarian, as long as you don't exceed the maximum daily dose, you'll be good.

To determine the maximum daily CBD dosage for dogs, we use a limit of 5 mg CBD/kg or 5 mg per 2.2 lbs. We increase this recommended maximum only when new studies emerge supporting higher doses. Please talk to your veterinarian about doses higher than 5 mg of CBD per kg of body weight.

Figuring out the right dosage for dogs will largely be up to you. You know your pet best and what to give your dog. Make sure to keep an eye on him for a few hours after you first administer CBD oil. Learn about the effects it has so you know how to adjust the dose to maximize the benefits.

Besides showing you the minimum, average, and maximum dose, our CBD dosage calculator will tell you roughly how many drops your CBD oil bottle contains, the concentration of your CBD oil bottle, and the concentration of the CBD itself.

Our CBD dosage calculator is a great tool that helps you calculate the correct CBD dosage based on your dog's weight. This tool will give you confidence that you are helping your dog reach the desired dosage amount!

When first starting CBD, start small and increase slowly until the desired effects are achieved. Several factors, from body chemistry to tolerance, will all determine the CBD dose.

Maximum CBD Dosage - Large dog at 50kgs, 250mg per day - Small dog at 5kgs, 25mg per day

Using the Detailed CBD Dosage Chart for Dogs and Cats

Comparing example dosages of different strengths from 0.05mg/kg (minimum dose) to 5mg/kg (maximum dose)

To find how many total milligrams, first find the CBD Dosage Chart specific to the product and variant that you will be administering to your pet, for example. PurCBD (Product) & 125mg (variant). From there decide on what strength of dosage you want to give your pet: Minimum, Average, Medium, Strong, or Maximum. If not sure, start with the minimum.

  • The Minimum dose is calculated based on 0.05mg/kg
  • The Average dose is calculated based on 0.45mg/kg
  • The Strong dose is calculated based on 1.25mg/kg
  • The Maximum daily dose is calculated based on 5.00mg/kg

Find your pet's weight on the left-hand side of the chart and follow the grid to the right until you reach the desired strength you have decided on. When you arrive at the correct block, it will give you the suggested drops to administer your pet every 6-8 hours (Note that ½ of the dropper is equivalent to 16 drops). If your suggested dosage requires a larger amount of CBD oil and says to use another optimal dose of CBD, then find the respected dosing chart for that mg of CBD and start with the minimum dosage for your pet's weight.

Dosing CBD oil doesn't have to be confusing. Some of the best advice we can offer is to monitor your pet's reaction to how much CBD oil is given and to make adjustments accordingly. Unlike many drugs, there is little to worry about when increasing to a strong dose. Some pets react well to low doses of CBD, while others need a good bit more. We always recommend watching for side effects or abnormalities whenever changing dosages for dogs and cats, but if you see your pet reacting well to a stronger dose, there is nothing to be concerned about. It is perfectly fine if your pet is consuming CBD daily, just make sure you don't exceed the maximum daily dose unless recommended by your veterinarian or medical professional.

Finding The Right CBD Product For Your Pet

Finding the right CBD product for your dog or cat involves a lot more than just dosage. It will depend on your pet's weight, what their preferences are, what they are being treated for, and other factors specific to your pet. To find the right CBD product for your pet, you'll need to take all of this into consideration.

In general, as long as you're using organic hemp CBD, you can't go wrong. You do need to make sure that you are purchasing CBD that was intended for animal use and not simply giving your pet CBD intended for people. Humans and animals - while both able to benefit from CBD - do not have the same kinds of tolerances to the mg of CBD.

This is especially true when looking at CBD that was harvested from the marijuana cannabis plant rather than hemp. Marijuana has high amounts of THC in it, which is toxic to dogs and cats. Giving your pet irresponsibly sourced CBD products can have dire consequences.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Calculating CBD Oil Dosage for Specific Medical Conditions?

These are some of the most frequently asked questions we get, and we have an easy answer for you. CBD oil dosage isn't as set in stone for specific ailments. CBD is used to balance the body to homeostasis, helping the body work to heal itself. Each condition that CBD has shown to have benefits for is usually systemic, so the goal of CBD is to bring the system back into homeostasis or "balance".

How many MG of CBD For Anxiety, Epilepsy or Cancer?

Unfortunately, the Food and Drug Administration does not allow us to recommend specific doses based on specific medical conditions. For additional help in managing your pet's specific medical condition - whether with CBD or not - we recommend that you check out our blog section. It's complete with full of research and helpful tips on the best ways to help your pet with their unique medical conditions. Different conditions may require different dosage levels, so make sure to research your pet-specific condition.

What Happens If I Give My Dog Too Much CBD Oil?

If you give your pet too much CBD oil, you may notice that it makes them tired — whereas a lower CBD oil dosage may have given them a boost in their step. If you notice this side effect, there is little to nothing to worry about.

Some pet owners purposely give their pets high doses of CBD oil to help with insomnia. Common side effects such as nausea or diarrhea may happen, but they are fairly rare and mild. With digestive issues, it's usually the hemp oil carrier that causes the stomach irritation rather than the CBD.

Cytochrome P450 Enzymes

The one side effect of concern with high doses of CBD oil is its affinity to temporarily inhibit enzymes that metabolize drugs in the liver — grapefruit does this as well.

As such, if your pet is on a dosage-sensitive prescription drug that's metabolized in the liver, you'll likely want to keep CBD dosages mild or low vs. higher dosages.

Your veterinarian will be able to help you monitor your pet to ensure that hemp CBD oil interaction with the other drug is positive. With digestive issues, it's usually the hemp oil carrier that causes the stomach irritation rather than the CBD.

In many cases, a specific CBD dosage has led to a decrease in the other drug’s dosage with no increase of side effects. In effect , pet owners have been known to stop the prescription drugs all together and just give their pet CBD. This is all at the discretion of you , the owner and what you choose to give your dog.

Our CBD dosage calculator and dosage chart will help you find the correct low and mild dosage based on your pet's weight, and we recommend talking to your veterinarian first before doing this on your own.

What’s Better For CBD Dosage: CBD Oil, Treats, Capsules, etc?

If you’re looking for precise dose of CBD, our PurCBD+ oil/tincture is still your best option as capsules and treats will carry a one-size-fits-all dose.

However, this is not much of a concern, as even extremely large doses are well tolerated by most pets with no signs of side effects. This only will happen in special circumstances.

Another pro of CBD oil is its fast absorption rate. When administered under the tongue, it quickly enters into the bloodstream.

Besides those two factors, there are only a few minor differences amongst CBD products, which you can read more about below.

How to Dose with CBD Capsules, Treats, Chews, and Pellets

CBD Capsules for Dogs

Our Hemp CBD Gold Capsules contain 5 mg of CBD and 25mg of CBD per capsule each, making them great for dogs 40lbs and up. At this weight level, most pet owners find raising the dosage in increments of 5 mg of CBD is effective and easily managed.

Like all other forms of CBD, capsules typically provide relief of symptoms for 6-8 hours. In that time, you can administer more CBD if needed. Unlike oil/tincture, capsules have to pass through the digestive system before it's absorbed into the bloodstream, so expect 30-60 minutes before you see CBD effects set in.

If they need a quicker onset of relief, we recommend the CBD hemp oil tincture PurCBD+. The thin tissue of the mouth makes CBD readily absorbable into the bloodstream, and you'll typically see CBD working within 10-30 minutes, depending on how long your pet was able to hold the oil in their mouth.

CBD Dog Treats & CBD Soft Chews

Our Hemp CBD dog treats and Hemp CBD soft chews are 5 mg of CBD per treat and range from 1mg of CBD to 2.5mg of CBD per chew, depending on which specific chew you choose. Making the treats and chews fantastic for most dogs as you can break them in half for very small breeds. Our Soft Chews are great for small pets under 20 lbs and older dogs that have trouble chewing harder treats or any dog with dental issues.

It's surprisingly difficult to find dose-appropriate treats for small pets, so we knew we had to change that. That is a major reason why we have specific chews for mobility, skin & coat, multi-vitamins, and calming each with their own mg CBD to accommodate dogs and pets of all sizes.

Like the CBD capsules, treats will have to pass through the digestive tract before the body can absorb it, so expect the onset of effects to begin within 30-60 minutes. Feel free to break the treats in half for around half the regular dose if needed. For smaller dogs, this will also need to be done, as they can only handle a certain mg of CBD per lb, especially those under 10 pounds. Unfortunately, it is easy to give the very small toy breeds too much CBD.

CBD Dosage for Horses

Equine Hemp Pellets

While catered to riders, farriers, trainers, and large-animal veterinarians, we designed our CBD Hemp Pellets in a way that makes them perfect for all animals that consume food in pellet form. Within the process of making CBD we have created a pellet using the plant bi-product which still carries all cannabinoids from the hemp plant and we are able to use all our resources while limiting the waste.

Instead of making a large one-size-fits-all pellet, we broke up the large dose into mini-pellets. This allows goats, sheep, and even pocket pets like rabbits to benefit from taking hemp CBD.

Here is the guideline to follow when giving Equine Hemp Pellets to your horse. 1 tablespoon equals 25 mg of CBD. Remember, this is just a guideline and starting point. You will still need to trial and error with your horse or livestock as some only need a small amount of CBD while other larger animals may need a strong dose.

Your average CBD capsule formulated for humans is around 10-15 mg, and that's what we recommend for a miniature horse with a body weight of 350 lbs. Please note that this number is an example and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or mitigate for your mini horse.

If administering to a much smaller animal, you'll want to check out the charts "Generic Hemp Equine Pellets Dosage Guide" and "Hemp CBD Tier Dosage Guidelines".

Hemp Pellets CBD Dosage Guide For Horses:

  • Miniature (<350lbs) = 10mg of CBD
  • Pony (<900lbs) = 20 mg of CBD
  • Horse (<1500lbs) = 50 mg of CBD
  • XL/Draft (>1500lbs) = 65 mg of CBD

Generic Hemp Pellets CBD Dosage Guide:

  • 1 Tbsp = 25 mg of CBD
  • ½ Tbsp = 12.2 mg of CBD
  • 1 tsp = 8.3 mg of CBD
  • ½ tsp = 4.15 mg of CBD
  • ¼ tsp = 2 mg of CBD

Final Thoughts

All in all, giving your pet too much CBD will just likely result in you wasting money. This often limits small pet owners to the tincture form, but at Innovet Pet, we were determined to not have that happen to you.

That’s why we provide Soft Hemp Chews that are appropriately dosed for small pets and easy on their smaller jaws. We even have farm animals and pocket pets covered with our Hemp Pellets.
