How Much CBD Oil Should I Give For My Horse?

We’ve mentioned before we prefer CBD oils because they make administering precise dosages effortless, and it’s the easiest way to find out how much CBD a horse needs.

Remember, all horses are unique and this along with the severity of their condition can greatly affect the amount of CBD you should give them.

Fortunately, it’s not a complete guessing game as your horse’s weight will give you a dosage you can start with and work from there.

There is no unsafe amount of CBD you can give your horse, but we’ve found that lower and medium dosages are often all that’s needed and they don’t risk making your horse tired like high dosages can.

The maximum daily dosage for Horses, is 2.20 mg/lb or 1.00 mg/kg

We break individual/single CBD dosages into three tiers based on the horse’s weight, and each has its advantages.

Low Tier Single Dose (0.022 mg/lb or 0.05mg/kg)

This is where we recommend you start and you can keep your horse here while CBD builds up in their system which takes a week or two. If using CBD for preventative health or overall wellness, this is a great dosage range to stay in. (1)(2)

Average Tier Single Dose (0.068 mg/lb or 0.15 mg/kg):

By the name you can guess that this is the most popular dosage as it greatly helps with most conditions without making them feel tired. (5)

Strong Tier Single Dose (0.136 mg/lb or 0.30 mg/kg)

Some conditions like epilepsy, severe pain, etc. sometimes require the strongest support and this is the dosage range for them. (3)(4)

Our CBD Oil for horses comes into two concentration sizes so it’s just as easy to give a precise dosage to a pony as it is a draft horse. Our 750mg is suited to smaller horses and ponies, while our 1500mg is better for larger horses that require more CBD. Same great CBD oil, one just has more CBD.

How Does CBD Help Horses

The moment you’ve been waiting for. Let’s take a tour through the top ways CBD can help horses everywhere with the problems them most commonly face.

A quick look at common conditions CBD can help horses with:

  • Allergies
  • Anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Bloating
  • Colic
  • Desmitis
  • Gastric Ulcers
  • Lack of Appetite
  • Laminitis
  • Nausea
  • Pain
  • Overall Wellness

CBD For Inflammatory Conditions

Characterized by its painful inflammation and distribution of mobility, arthritis is one of the most common health conditions that affect horses. Arthritis can cut years off their ability to compete, work, and their life.

And arthritis is just one of several conditions where chronic inflammation is at the base of the disease. The endocannabinoid system, that CBD supplements, mends and repairs many regulatory systems but nowhere more than the immune system.

This means CBD is likely most advantageous for reducing inflammation.

CBD helps the immune system maintain its health giving it the ability to better respond to what is and isn’t harming it allowing CBD to help with everything from allergies to inflammatory mobility conditions.

CBD For Pain Relief

Along with inflammation that often hinders horses’ mobility is debilitating pain. Above, we learned that CBD can reduce inflammation, and this means it can help with painful inflammatory conditions like laminitis.

However, it’s not just inflammatory pain that CBD can help with but all forms, including neuropathic (nerve damage) and nociceptive (injury) pain.

This so important to see in a pain relief aid for horses because their large size often puts them at a greater risk for an injury, soreness, and mobility issues, especially if they’re involved in sports or work,

We’ve seen many horse owners use CBD to help their horses not only feel better while recovering from injury, surgery, etc. but also recover faster and feel stronger.

CBD For Anxiety & Nervousness

Without a doubt, one of the biggest reasons CBD is given to horses is to help them with stress and anxiety. Horses are emotionally intelligent and sensitive creatures and this makes prone to nervousness.

Traveling in trailers, rehoming, competition, horseshoeing, and even general excitement while on the job can cause your horse considerable stress physically and mentally, and in serious cases result in injury.

That’s a lot of different triggers, fortunately, both research and horse owners have found CBD oil naturally instills a sense of calm and focus, giving them the ability to better adapt to their surroundings.

CBD For Digestive Health

From colic to bloating to lack of appetite, horses, especially those who perform at a high level or fed a grain diet, frequently see digestive problems.

Digestive issues often occur when something irritates your horse’s digestive tract which triggers overactive inflammation. This is where CBD oils come in, which help the inflammatory process remain calm and in control.

This reduces inflammation that causes a host of digestive issues including indigestive, ulcers, and poor absorption of nutrients.

CBD Oil For Horses Overall Health

By stimulating your horses endocannabinoid system you don’t just tackle individual issues, you also improve their preventive and overall health.

The Health Aid That’s Changed Everything

It’s the big health aid that's on the tip of everyone's tongue. By now, you’ve likely heard about the health benefits of CBD for us, and perhaps, for our dogs and cats. If you haven't, CBD is offering millions the extra TLC they need to combat the daily wear-and-tear of life.

For some, it helps support their anxiety or helps with pain relief, for others it helps them combat the side effects of chemo, and for many, it’s been a lifesaver by managing drug-resistant forms of epilepsy.

Hemp CBD is an amazing health aid that many find irreplaceable, and we want to show you how it can greatly improve your horse's health and wellbeing.

Horses are irreplaceable members of our society and for centuries have helped make the lives of humans easier. It’s time we give back!

Whether you’re looking to get a leg up on the competition, help support your horse’s mobility, or just want to protect them against common health issues, we’re here to show you how CBD can help. We’ll also cover questions like what are CBD side effects, how much CBD do I give my horse, and more.

What Is Cannabis?

Before we move on, let’s go over why we should rethink the word cannabis.

Both hemp and marijuana are cannabis plants with the same compounds, however, they occur in different ratios. As such cannabis doesn’t always equal a psychoactive high. While all cannabis plants have therapeutic benefits, Hemp lacks THC making it safe and non-intoxicating for pets.

What is CBD For Horses?

Cannabidiol or CBD is a therapeutic cannabinoid found in cannabis plants and lends its name to a type of extract that’s derived from the flowers.

More specifically, CBD is derived from Cannabis sativa L plants — an umbrella term that includes both hemp and marijuana plants.

While called CBD, the heavy majority of CBD products contain the full range of compounds found in cannabis which includes cannabinoids like CBD as well as other beneficial compounds like terpenes and flavonoids.

CBD is largely derived from hemp plants, because unlike its cousin, marijuana, hemp lack high amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which gives marijuana its signature high. When you pluck most of the THC away from cannabis plants, they can no longer cause a high and they become incredibly safe for our us, and our pets.

Essentially, CBD from hemp plants lets you take advantage of medical marijuana’s benefits, but without the high.

How Does CBD Work?

Right now, you’re probably thinking, “how can CBD help my horse with so many things, this sounds like snake oil!”

What’s beautiful about CBD is when you understand a little science behind it, everything makes sense.

CBD products like CBD for horses helps supplement the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). This is a regulatory messaging system that produces its own cannabinoids like CBD to ensure other regulatory functions in the body are performing properly.

Regulatory systems —  like the immune or nervous system —  are your horse’s first-line-of-defense against disease, infections, stress, you name it. But all of those things can severely wear those systems down, leading to several health issues.

The ECS’ job is to keep regulatory systems going strong when under intense pressure, and mainly works to help processes that regulate sleep, mood, pain, immunity, appetite, and even fertility.

Unfortunately, the ECS can’t always produce enough endocannabinoids to keep up with whatever is causing the body stress. When this happens, your horse may become hypersensitive to pain, inflammation, allergies, nervousness, and on.

Since plant cannabinoids can do the same job endocannabinoids can, supplementing the ECS with them helps the ECS better carry out its job. Especially if one of the regulatory systems is really struggling.

All mammals have their own ECS, and it plays a role in several regulatory systems throughout the body. This means CBD can help improve health, in both big and small on a cellular level.

Does CBD Get You High & Is CBD Legal?

We are excited to say that hemp-derived CBD products are legal in the United States and much of the world because they don’t cause a high.

When cannabis contains low levels of marijuana’s signature compound, THC, it has significantly different effects on the body. There is no high, none of the associated side effects like dry mouth or paranoia, and it’s safe where marijuana is rather dangerous to certain animals like dogs.

Hemp plans that contain 0.3% THC or less they are legally labeled “industrial hemp” and CBD products from these plants are smooth sailing for all animals.

What Is CBD Oil For Horses?

You might know that CBD products come in a lot of different shapes and sizes. There are CBD topicals, hemp pellets, and on. If you’ve never given CBD to your horse before we recommend CBD oil for horses.

CBD oils are one of the simplest forms of CBD products consisting of just the hemp CBD extract and a carrier oil that improves absorption. But don’t let that trick you into thinking they are basic.

CBD oils are the most popular form of CBD products for good reasons. They let you easily administer precise dosages, letting you give only as much CBD as your horse needs. Not only does this avoid one of CBD’s rare side effects — high doses = sleepiness — it also helps you save money.

CBD oils allow you to start slowly because you’ll see effects occur much faster than you will with forms that need to be fully digestive first such as CBD pellets — 30min vs. 60min.

You can administer CBD oils orally for the fastest effects or simply mix it into their food, which takes a little longer.

Alternatives to CBD Oil For Horses

A great thing about CBD is its ability to adapt to different forms that can offer certain advantages over other forms.

For example, we offer Equine CBD Hemp Pellets that are incredibly easy to give — just mix it in with their regular feed and CBD’s flavor is completely masked. These pellets also work great for all livestock.

We also offer a highly concentrated CBD Calming Paste designed to deliver high doses of CBD that kick in faster to help provide immediate to severe anxiety, stress, and pain relief.

Is There A Difference In Hemp Oil And CBD Oil?

There are three basic consumable extracts that come from cannabis plants: Hemp CBD extracts, Marijuana extracts, and Hemp Seed oil. Where the first two come from the flowers of the plant, hemp seed oil —  commonly called hemp oil — comes from the seeds.

Hemp oil does not contain cannabinoids like CBD like the other extracts, but it does contain beneficial omega fatty acids and antioxidants that help cardiovascular, immune, and skin health. As well, it’s completely safe and extremely beneficial to horses.

Hemp seed oil is a vital part of CBD oil because it gives the cannabinoids a fat to bind to which makes it much easier for the body to absorb.

In summary: CBD oil = Hemp CBD extract + Hemp seed oil (or another MCT oil).

How Long Does It Take For CBD To Work?

CBD oils are known for their rapid effects that start working within 30-60 minutes. Depending on your horse’s body chemistry and their illness, it may take up to 2 weeks before CBD starts displaying full noticeable results. Think of it like a multivitamin.

What Are CBD’s Side Effects?

CBD has taken the health world by storm. One reason is the long list of health issues it can help with. The other reason is CBD’s lack of side effects.

There is a significant and growing body of research that shows CBD can replace many conventional medications that come with harsh side effects. In most cases, side effects are never seen with CBD.

In the rare cases when side effects are seen they are seen, they are fairly mild e.g. nausea and tiredness with high dosages (completely harmless).

There is only one major side effect to pay attention to, and that is CBD’s ability to interfere with certain drugs metabolized in the liver. If your horse is on such a drug, we advise you talk to your veterinarian about CBD before using. This interaction is not uncommon as foods such as grapefruit and kale do the same.

CBD Oil for Other Animals

One of the many fantastic things about CBD is its ability to help all animals in the same way thanks to us all having an endocannabinoid system.

For dogs, CBD has been fantastic for helping their anxiety, especially with fireworks, storms, and separation. As well, CBD may help support the normal healthy structure of the endocannabinoid system in dog breeds prone to genetic conditions like epilepsy and hip dysplasia.

At Innovet Pet, we offer several CBD options for dogs: CBD Treats, CBD Chews, and CBD Oil

Of course, there are our feline friends, and CBD has been helping them things like keeping their mobility strong in their senior years and feel more comfortable in crates. For them, we have a CBD Oil For Cats and CBD Soft Chews.

Last, CBD can benefit other livestock animals like goats and sheep. For them we recommend our 750mg version as it fits their weight range well. You can also give them our Equine CBD Hemp Pellets

Our CBD oils comes in 30ml bottles with different concentration sizes so you can choose the version that works best for your pet’s size.

Our chart below will help point you to which version is best for your pet, but any concentration size is fine for any animal. Though our 125mg that’s great for cats won’t last long with a horse, and a single drop from the 1500mg is a high dose for a cat, making it difficult to give them a lower dose.

Level 1 (Cats & Small Dogs)

125mg: 5lbs-25lbs

Level 2 (Big Cats & Medium-Sized Dogs)

250mg: 20lbs-45lbs

Level 3 (Large Dogs & Livestock)

750mg: 45lbs-90lbs

Level 4 (Giant Dogs & Horses)

1500mg: 90lbs-900lbs

Where To Get CBD Oil For Horses & What You Need To Know Before Buying CBD

CBD has collected an immense amount of popularity within a few short years and has changed how we care for both our health and the health of our pets.

Unfortunately, this popularity has led to quite a few poor quality “CBD” products out there. We put CBD in quotes because often these products contain little to no CBD. As well, they can contain dangerous levels of THC, pesticides, and other harmful chemicals.

We want you to choose our CBD oil for horses, but above all else, we want to ensure the safety of your horse.

CBD is being investigated all over the world for many uses. However at this time, as the manufacturer of CBD products, we are not allowed to discuss that subject publicly nor we are not allowed to imply that CBD can be used for any specific treatment.

Check Out Our List of Guidelines To Follow When Buying CBD:

  • Organic:  Hemp has phytoremediation properties with the ability to clean up toxic spills. That’s why it’s so important to only buy CBD derived from organic hemp that’s grown free of pesticides and other toxic chemicals.
  • Extraction Method: There are several different ways to extract CBD, including methods that use dangerous solvents that leave a residue. CO2 solventless extraction is, without a doubt, the preferred method producing purest and safest CBD concentrate.
  • Certificate of Analysis (COA): A COA is the guaranteed analysis of the CBD product. It’s undertaken by an independent lab and will show the accurate amount of the main cannabinoids and terpenes. Make sure your CBD product has one and that the label matches the results.
  • Inactive Ingredients: Make sure to read the back of the label for other ingredients that aren’t CBD or a carrier oil. All most all CBD oils will have a carrier oil such as coconut or hemp seed oil in it.
  • Full or Broad Spectrum: It’s highly recommended that you use a CBD product that is their broad or full-spectrum, meaning it includes the terpenes and flavonoids also found in hemp. These additional compounds greatly improve the overall benefits.

We’re proud to say that we uphold our standards to the highest practices and that’s why our full spectrum organic hemp CBD extract has been CO2 extracted and tested by an independent lab for the highest purity and potency.

Is CBD Right For Your Horse?

Hemp CBD has opened up a new world in the way we can care and support our horses’ health.

Whether that’s using CBD as an anxiety aid to help them stay calm and focused. Or using CBD to support their mobility by reducing inflammation and pain. CBD can offer support to all horses in some way, be it for general wellness or to tackle a debilitating chronic disease.

In our two decades in animal health and wellness, we’ve never seen anything quite as unique and special as hemp CBD. It’s given many horse owners the ability to care for their horse’s health without having to worry about the side effects that can come from prescription medications.

CBD offers one of the major keys to long-term wellness, and that’s taking care of it on a day-to-day basis by promoting inwards balance and functional health. And it does this naturally by supplementing the ever-important endocannabinoid system.

We created CBD oil for horses because we saw how Hemp CBD helped our fur children and knew we had to tell pet owners everywhere about this amazing plant.
